An August retrofit only when the host deadbolt agrees
August sits on a deadbolt you already have. The visit checks door thickness, confirms Wi-Fi actually reaches that slab, calibrates auto-lock, and leaves a mechanical key. The thumbturn, the door sensor, and the keypad are parts of that kit. A misaligned tailpiece is the usual reason the bolt grinds after the app said the install was done.
Book it when you want the existing deadbolt to lock itself and you have already checked that the model is on August's fit list. Skip it when the deadbolt is a SmartKey that is already failing, or when the door is a narrow-stile storefront. Bring the host lock's name and a photo of the inside thumbturn.
Wi-Fi at the slab, a battery, and a key that still works
Included is the fit check, calibration, a working key, and a plain statement if the Wi-Fi is too weak at the door. Not included is a new router, a mesh node, or repainting the door. Dead batteries, weak Wi-Fi, and thumbturn drag are expected snags. The host lock should be ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 or better. The manufacturer's fit guide decides the rest.
DC row doors are often thicker than a new suburban slab, or they have a stack of paint that changes the tailpiece length. We measure. A condo corridor sometimes has no reliable Wi-Fi at the unit door even when the living room streams video. The lock can still work with the keypad and the key. We will not pretend the app is the only way in.
Frequent questions
What happens if the existing deadbolt is not on the fit list?
The August does not go on. Forcing the tailpiece into an odd thumbturn strips the bolt. The honest job is a listed host deadbolt first, then the retrofit, or a different smart lock that replaces the whole cylinder.
Why do you leave a mechanical key if the app is the point?
Batteries die and phones get left in the car. The key is the way in when the keypad is dark. We hand it over and we do not hide it in the app's marketing.
How do you tell a weak door signal from a bad calibration?
Calibration is the bolt throwing cleanly and auto-lock timing. Signal is whether the lock joins the network while it is mounted on that slab, not while it is sitting on the kitchen counter during setup.
Can auto-lock be turned off for a dog walker who props the door?
Yes. Leaving auto-lock on while someone props the door burns the motor and marks the strike. We set the behavior you will actually live with, then test it.
