Narrow-stile doors that take carts, crowds, and a closer all day

Mall and storefront doors are narrow-stile leaves. An Adams Rite latch, a pivot, a closer, and the rail are inspected as a set. The latch and the deadlatch are checked. Pivots are inspected for wear. The closer is set so it is not so hot that it shakes the rail screws loose. A deadlatch held in, pivot wear, a closer wound too hot, and rail screws backing out are the daily failures on these doors.

Call it for a retail entrance that no longer stays latched or that sags at the pivot. A hollow-metal stair door is a different hardware set. Tell us if the door is a pair and which leaf is active.

Adams Rite latches, pivots, and a deadlatch held in by the strike

Latch, deadlatch, pivot, closer, and rail check are the service. A new storefront system is not. Storefront practice and egress are the boundaries. We do not dog the leaf shut with a chain so the closer can be ignored.

Food courts and street retail beat these doors up in a way an office suite does not. The deadlatch is the part that makes the latch real. If a badly adjusted strike holds the deadlatch in, the door looks locked and opens with a pull. That is the first thing we check, before anyone sells a new lock case.

Frequent questions

What does it mean if the deadlatch is held in?

The small plunger is pressed by a misaligned strike, so the main latch never deadlocks. The door opens with a sharp pull. Adjusting the strike, not replacing the whole rail, is often the repair.

Why look at pivots if the complaint is the lock?

A worn pivot drops the stile and the latch misses. A new latch at the wrong height fails immediately. The pivot is checked while the leaf is moved by hand.

What is a closer that is too hot?

One that slams the stile hard enough to walk the rail screws out. Speed and spring are eased until the door still latches without shaking the glass.

Can these doors take a residential deadbolt?

No. The stile is too narrow. The lock case belongs in the rail. A bore saw is the wrong tool and we will not bring it to this door.
