Patch fittings and rails sized to the glass that is actually there

Tempered glass entrances depend on patch fittings, bottom rails, pivots, and the lock that sits in the rail. Glass thickness is confirmed before a fitting is swapped. Pivot wear is checked. Lock height is set to the strike the header or the floor actually has. Rail bolts are inspected. Cracked glass at a patch, a loose rail, the wrong lock case, and a leaking floor closer are the failures that look like 'the lock is bad' and are not.

Book it for a glass entry whose handle flops or whose rail ticks. Do not book a hollow-metal hardware package for an all-glass leaf. Tell us if the glass is already cracked. We do not drill tempered glass as an experiment.

Pivots, locks, and a rail bolt that loosened

You leave with fittings that match the thickness, a lock at the right height, and a note on the pivot. You do not leave with a re-tempered lite. The manufacturer's thickness limits and ordinary tempered-glass practice are the boundaries. A cracked lite at the patch is a glazier's replacement, and we will say that.

Storefronts along DC retail streets take a lot of slam from a closer that was never meant for a patch fitting. We check the closer and the pivot together. A floor closer that leaks is not ignored while the lock is adjusted, because the sag will undo the lock height by the next week.

Frequent questions

Can you drill a new hole in tempered glass for a different lock?

No. Tempered glass breaks if you drill it after the fact. The fitting has to match the holes already in the lite, or the lite is replaced by a glazier with the holes made before tempering.

How do you confirm thickness without guessing from the patch cover?

The edge is measured where it can be seen at the rail or the patch. Covers hide the glass. A 1/2-inch fitting on 3/8-inch glass will loosen, and the reverse will not seat.

What does pivot wear feel like to a customer?

The door drops, the rail scrapes, and the lock misses. Adjusting only the lock leaves the scrape. The pivot is the part that actually carried the weight.

Who replaces the glass if the patch has already cracked it?

A glazier. We will not keep tightening a fitting on a cracked lite. We can return for the lock and the rail once the new glass is in.
