Floor load, door swing, and a lock someone can still reach

Gun-safe placement checks the floor before the safe is walked into the room. Electronic locks and mechanical locks are programmed or set with a backup the client keeps. A lag kit is used only where the manufacturer allows holes. Lock height is set so the dial or keypad can be used after the door swing is clear. An upstairs floor that cannot carry the weight, a door blocked by the swing, a forgotten backup code, and an unbolted light safe are the problems we plan around.

Book it before delivery day if you can. Moving a safe that is already in the wrong room is harder than placing it once. This is not a GSA container. Tell us the floor level and whether the maker requires bolting.

Bolt-down rules, backup codes, and the upstairs floor that cannot take it

Placement, leveling, an allowed bolt-down, and a backup code you control are the job. Cracking a safe open because the code was lost is the opening service, quoted separately. The bolt-down sheet and a realistic floor load are the limits. We do not lag a safe into a floor the maker says not to penetrate, and we do not bolt through a membrane roof.

DC row houses often want the safe on an upper floor because the basement is damp. If the structure cannot take the weight, we say no. Virginia and Maryland slab-on-grade basements are usually the easier place, provided the swing is not into a water heater. The backup code stays with you. We do not keep a copy.

Frequent questions

Why ask about the floor before the delivery crew arrives?

A safe that reaches the upstairs hall and then has to go back down is how floors and people get hurt. The path and the load are decided first.

Do you keep the backup code in the shop file?

No. You leave with it. A code in our notes is a code that is no longer only yours. The procedure sheet can stay with the safe if you want it there.

When is bolting refused?

When the manufacturer forbids it, when the floor is a finished membrane, or when the fasteners would miss structure and only dimple the cabinet. An unbolted light safe is still described as unbolted so you know what you have.

Can the keypad be moved lower after the safe is full?

The lock height is chosen before the safe is loaded. Moving it later may mean unloading. We set the height while the box is empty.
