Kwikset deadbolts and SmartKey serviced without pretending they are pin stacks
Kwikset service starts by identifying whether the cylinder is SmartKey or a conventional pin stack. SmartKey condition is confirmed. It is reset or the cylinder is replaced. The strike is aligned. Keys are tested. A Halo or a plain deadbolt is installed to the fit guide, not to a memory of last year's model. Worn SmartKey, a painted bolt, short screws, and a smart lock piled on a weak door are the honest findings.
Book it for a Kwikset that sticks, a SmartKey that no longer resets, or a new deadbolt in that family. A Medeco upgrade is a different keyway and a different visit. Bring the reset tool if you were given one and it still slides in.
Worn SmartKey, painted bolts, and a strike that was never reinforced
Identification, a reset or a replacement, strike alignment, and a key test are included. A structural jamb repair is extra if the wood is split. The Kwikset fit guide and the grade mark on the box are what we follow. We do not run a SmartKey through a pin kit.
A lot of DC rentals were built out with SmartKey because it looked rekeyable forever. When the sidebar wears out, the honest fix is a new cylinder, not another reset that fails on Thursday. Suburban installs fail more often at the strike screws. Both get checked. Grade markings are read so a light duty knob is not described as a deadbolt.
Frequent questions
How do you tell SmartKey from a normal Kwikset pin cylinder?
The keyway and the sidebar slot give it away, as does the reset tool. If the tool does not belong, we do not force it. A pin follower in a SmartKey plug is the wrong instrument.
When is replacement more honest than another reset?
When the reset slips, the key pulls out while turned, or the sidebar is visibly chewed. A new cylinder costs less than a third visit for the same sag.
Can a painted bolt be freed without replacing the lock?
If the paint is a skin on the throw, yes. If paint filled the strike hole, the strike is cleared or moved. Paint is not lubrication.
Will you put a Wi-Fi keypad on a tired Kwikset deadbolt?
Only if the host lock still throws cleanly and the fit guide lists it. A smart lock on a weak bolt gives you an app notification of a lock that does not hold.
