A cam lock matched to the mailbox, not to a lookalike key
Mailbox work matches the cam. The lock is rekeyed or replaced. Keys go back to the resident who uses that box, not to a pile on a bench. USPS and private-box rules differ by the type of box, and we follow the type in front of us. Wrong cam length, a lost master, ignored cluster-box rules, and a forced door are the ways a five-minute lock becomes a damaged box.
Call when your box opens with a neighbor's key, the cam spins, or a new resident needs the box to stop taking the old key. We do not cut a postal master. If the cluster box is a USPS unit with rules that reserve the master, we say what we can and cannot touch.
Cam length, cluster-box rules, and keys returned to the right resident
Cam match, rekey or replacement, and keys to the right person are the scope. Replacing the whole cluster box is not. Cam length and the mailbox type are the limits. A forced door that is already bent may need the box repaired before a new lock will sit.
Apartment lobbies in the area use several box brands that look identical and take different cams. We measure the cam. A private mail room and a USPS cluster box are not given the same speech. Keys are handed to the resident or the manager named on the work order, not left in the lock.
Frequent questions
Why does cam length matter if the key turns?
A short cam does not catch the door. A long cam binds and bends the door the next time someone yanks it. The length is matched to the box, not to the keyway alone.
Can you copy or replace the postal master?
No. If the box is the type where that key is reserved, we work only on the resident lock we are allowed to touch, or we stop.
Who receives the new keys?
The resident of that box or the manager who ordered the work and will hand them over. A ring of unnamed mailbox keys left in the lobby is not a completed job.
What if the door was pried and the lock still works?
The lock is not the whole repair. A bent door will not latch reliably with any cam. We say whether the door needs metal work before a new lock is worth installing.
