A storm door that closes without fighting the entry door

Storm-door installation checks the brickmold, sets the closer, aligns the sweep, and confirms the handle clears the entry-door hardware. A slam, a handle clash, an out-of-square opening, and a missing drip are the reasons a new storm door scars the entry door behind it. The manufacturer's sheet is the fastener layout. Sweep adjustment is redone after the closer is set, because the two interact.

Order it when you want a storm or screen door in front of an entry that is staying. Replacing the entry door itself is the residential door install. Measure nothing for a special-size order until the opening is checked for square.

Brickmold, closers, sweeps, and a handle that clears

Brickmold check, closer, sweep, and handle clearance are the install. Glass replacement in an unrelated window is not. The sheet and the sweep adjustment are the quality bar. We do not let the storm-door handle hit the entry lever every time it closes.

Masonry entries on older houses are out of square more often than the storm-door box expects. Shimming is part of the job. A closer that slams will pit the entry door's finish in a season. It is eased until the storm door still latches. The drip is installed so water is not funneled behind the brickmold.

Frequent questions

Why does handle clearance matter more than the color of the storm door?

The handles collide and chip both finishes, or the storm door cannot close. Clearance is checked with both handles installed, not assumed from the catalog side-view.

What does the closer do to the sweep?

A closer that pulls unevenly lifts one side of the sweep and drags the other. Sweep alignment is checked after the closer is set, not before and then forgotten.

When is the opening too far out of square?

When the storm door would need to be racked to latch. We say so before the frame is screwed to a twist. Some openings need work on the brickmold first.

Where does the drip go if the old door had none?

Where the sheet shows it, so water leaves the bottom instead of entering behind the side frame. Skipping it because the old door 'never had one' repeats the rot.
