An operator set to the weight of this leaf

A low-energy or full-automatic operator is tuned after the door is weighed, not after the brochure is read. Opening speed, the safety zone, and the arm geometry are set on site. The knowing-act switch is labeled so people know what starts the cycle. A sensor blind spot, an arm that slaps the stop, missing power, and a leaf that is simply too heavy are the reasons a new operator still feels wrong.

Schedule it when an entrance should open on a switch or a sensor and the closer is no longer the right machine. Call a closer service instead if the door only needs sweep and latch speed. Bring the header photo and say whether the door is a required exit.

Knowing-act switches, sensors, and a door that is too heavy

Included is the weigh-in, speed and safety setup, and a labeled switch. Not included is a new storefront or a fire-alarm tie that an electrician and the authority having jurisdiction still have to accept. ANSI/BHMA A156.19 is the low-energy reference. ADA reach and force questions sit beside it.

DC clinics and Virginia school vestibules often have a switch on the wrong wall, so the person who needs the operator cannot reach it. We relocate the control when the scope allows. A Maryland retail header without power is a quote for power first. We do not hang an operator that cannot cycle.

Frequent questions

Why weigh the door if the operator has a size printed on the box?

The box assumes a leaf. Stacked glass, a stacked stile, or a door full of water-soaked wood is heavier. Speed and force set for the wrong weight either stall or hit too hard.

What is a knowing-act switch in ordinary words?

A button or plate a person presses on purpose to start the cycle. It is not a sensor that surprises someone in the swing path. The label matters because visitors do not know your brand name for the plate.

Can the safety sensor be skipped to save a trip?

No. A blind spot in the swing is how people get hit. If the header cannot see the zone, the operator is not put in service.

What if the header has no power on the day of the survey?

The mechanical layout can be measured. The operator is not commissioned. Power is a predecessor, and we write that down instead of leaving a dead arm on the door.
