Sweep, latch, and backcheck set on the closer this door needs

Closer service sizes the unit to the leaf. An LCN 4040XP, a Norton 7500, a concealed closer, or a drop plate may be what the header can accept. Sweep and latch speeds are set separately. Backcheck is checked so the door does not get thrown into the stop by a gust. The arm shoe is confirmed tight. Wrong size, a missed parallel-arm mount, leaking fluid, and no drop plate are why a closer slams even after someone 'turned the screw.'

Schedule it when a door slams, hangs open, or no longer latches. An automatic operator is a different machine if you need a button to open the leaf. A photo of the closer body and the arm, taken from inside, tells us the mount before we arrive.

Size, arm type, and a leak that adjustment will not fix

You get a size check, valve settings, and a shoe that actually holds. You do not get a closer wound so light that a fire door stops latching. ANSI/BHMA A156.4 is the closer standard. ADA force limits apply when the opening has to stay usable. Fluid on the header means replacement, not another turn of the valve.

Street-facing doors in DC see wind that an interior Maryland office never does. The size that worked in a corridor will slam on an exterior court. We set backcheck for that exposure. A concealed closer in a wood door is not adjusted like a surface unit on hollow metal, and we do not pretend the valves are in the same place.

Frequent questions

Which valve is the one people turn until the door dies?

The spring or the latch valve, depending on the brand. Latch speed is not the same as spring power. We set them apart and then close the door from the open position while we listen.

When is a drop plate required?

When the header is too shallow for the closer body. Forcing the closer onto a short header twists the arm. The plate is cheaper than a ruined mount.

What does leaking fluid mean for the adjustment?

The closer is done. Valves will not put the fluid back. A leaking Norton or LCN gets replaced with a sized unit, not nursed through another season.

Can a closer be weakened so everyone is happy, including the fire door?

Only inside the range that still latches. A fire door that needs a push to latch is a deficiency. Comfort does not outrank the latch.
