A fire door inspected as a whole assembly, not as a closer plus optimism
An NFPA 80 look treats the leaf, the frame, the hardware, and the clearance as one assembly. The label is read. Clearances are measured. The closer and the latch are checked. Deficiencies are written down. A propped door, a missing closer, a field hole, and a painted-over label are deficiencies, not housekeeping notes.
Ask for this when you need to know whether a labeled door still behaves like a labeled door. A closer adjustment with no inspection is the closer service. We are not the fire marshal. We write what we can see.
Labels, clearances, and the hole somebody drilled last summer
The product is a written deficiency list tied to what was measured. It is not a certificate that the building passed. NFPA 80 and ordinary annual-inspection practice are the references. We do not paint a label back on to make a report look tidy.
Stair doors in apartment buildings get propped and then lose their closers. We write the prop and the missing hardware separately. A field hole for a sign or a wire is called out because it can void the assembly. Clearing the door so it looks better for an hour is not the inspection.
Frequent questions
Do you issue a passing certificate?
No. You get the deficiencies we measured: clearances, latch, closer, label, obvious holes. The authority having jurisdiction decides what those findings mean.
What if the label is painted over?
It is written as not legible. We do not scrape it into a guess. A missing or illegible label is its own line on the list.
Why measure clearance instead of just closing the door?
A door can latch and still exceed the gap the assembly allows. The feel of a close is not a measurement. The gauge is.
Is a wedge behind a stair door a hardware problem?
It is an operational deficiency. The closer may also be broken, which is why the wedge appeared. Both get written. Removing the wedge and leaving a dead closer is not a repair.
