Classroom and corridor hardware that still lets people exit

School door hardware separates lockdown function from egress. Classroom locks, closers, exit devices, and stops are checked against that split. Rooms are labeled. The corridor is walked. A blocked exit, a disconnected closer, a storeroom function on a classroom, and a chain on a panic device are the conditions we write up and remove from the plan.

Use this when a school wants hardware that latches and still exits. A lockdown-only product conversation is the companion service if the question is specifically barricade devices. Bring the room list. 'All the doors' is not a list.

Closers, stops, and a storeroom function that does not belong on a classroom

Function check, closer check, labels, and a corridor walk are the work. A security-camera design is not. NFPA 101 and the school's own safety plan are the two documents that matter. We do not install a chain because a work order called it temporary.

Older school buildings have corridor doors whose closers were disconnected so they would not slam, and then the doors became props. We reconnect the closer or we write why it cannot be. Classroom function and storeroom function are not interchangeable just because both locks are cylindrical.

Frequent questions

What is the difference between classroom and storeroom function?

Classroom hardware is meant to lock from inside while still allowing exit. Storeroom hardware typically stays locked on the outside and is a poor default for a room full of students. We name the function on the door, not the brand.

Why walk the corridor if the work order names one room?

The adjacent leaf is often propped or chained, which changes the exit path from the room we were asked to touch. We say what we saw. We do not pretend the one room is the whole path.

Can a closer stay disconnected if teachers hate the slam?

Not if the door is supposed to latch. The closer is adjusted so it latches without a slam. Leaving it off the door is a finding, not a preference we adopt.

Will you label rooms the way the office describes them?

Yes, in words staff use. A hardware schedule that says 'door 14' while everyone says 'art' is how the wrong function gets installed on the next visit.
