A fingerprint or a face, plus a credential that is not a finger
A biometric reader is enrolled with a test user only after a backup card exists. The fail mode is chosen on purpose. A mechanical override stays available. Privacy is documented because a fingerprint record is not a brass key. Direct sun on the reader, wet hands, no backup card, and a fail-secure magnet on an exit are the ways this job becomes a trap.
Use it where you truly need a biometric check and you already accept that some people will be unable to enroll. Do not use it as the only way out of a room. Bring a written answer for who holds the backup card and who is allowed to delete a template.
Sun, wet hands, and a fail mode that still allows exit
Included is enrollment of a test user, the fail-mode setting, the override, and a short privacy note for the admin. Not included is a legal opinion on biometric storage. UL 294 is the equipment reference. Your own privacy notice is the policy reference.
A DC law office may want a face reader in a bright vestibule. If the glass puts the sensor in glare, the reader moves or the project stops. We will not be the vendor who removes the backup card 'to make it more secure' and then leaves a staff member outside in the rain.
Frequent questions
Why is a backup card required if the reader is the security?
Fingers cut, faces change with a mask, and readers reboot. The backup card is how an authorized person still enters. A system with no second factor is a lockout waiting for the first bad morning.
What does fail mode mean on a biometric door?
It is what the lock does when power or the controller dies. An exit door that becomes fail-secure and has no mechanical way out is refused. The mode is written on the turnover note.
Where should the reader not be mounted?
In direct sun, in driving rain, or on the outside of an exit where the only release is the reader. Wet hands and glare are ordinary, and they should not be the thing that traps someone.
Do you keep a copy of the fingerprints?
No. Enrollment lives in the controller you administer. We document who was shown how to delete a template. We do not take a private copy away in the van.
