The card technology has to match the reader on that door

Proximity cards and smart cards are not interchangeable just because both are plastic. The reader, the controller, and the electric strike are specified together. Card technology is matched, door unlock time is set, a revoked card is tested, and the reader is labeled. Mixing 125 kHz prox with a smart-card population, a door held too long, a loose tamper switch, and cards passed around a shift are the faults that show up after a sloppy add.

Ask for this when people already carry cards, or when you are done with a keypad code taped to the frame. It is a poor fit for a single family door that only needs a deadbolt. Have one card from the batch you intend to keep using, and know who is allowed to revoke one.

Revocation, door time, and a pile of shared cards

The scope covers the match, the timing, the revoke test, and a label. It does not cover printing photo IDs or redesigning your lobby. UL 294 is the equipment mark we look for. Your credential policy decides whether a card may be shared. We will not enroll a card that has no person attached to it.

Many DC multi-tenant floors already have a landlord reader in the elevator lobby and a different reader at the suite. Those two systems do not merge because both say 'card' on the quote. We work on the door you control. A Maryland clinic that still has a jar of unnamed prox cards gets a revoke drill before we add more plastic.

Frequent questions

Can a 125 kHz prox card be read by a newer smart-card reader?

Only if that reader was built with both radios. Most newer readers are not. We read the existing card on a tester before we sell you a box that will ignore the whole staff.

What is a useful door unlock time?

Long enough for the person who just badged to reach the pull, short enough that a tailgater does not inherit an open door. We time it on site instead of leaving the factory default.

How do you prove a revoked card is actually dead?

We present it after the change. If the strike still fires, the controller and the reader are not talking about the same credential. That test is part of the visit, not a follow-up favor.

What should the label on the reader say?

Which door it is, in the words your staff use. 'Door 3' is useless if everyone calls it the alley. The label is how a lost card gets killed against the right opening.
