Relays, door-position switches, and a request-to-exit that must fire
Advanced strike work is the wiring logic around a strike that is more than a buzzer. Inputs are mapped. Unlock time is set. Request-to-exit is tested. The panel is labeled. A relay board, a door-position switch, and the rex input are the usual pieces. A rex that never fires, a door stuck unlocked, a noisy contact, and an unlabeled relay are how a 'working' strike fails an inspection.
This is the follow-on when the strike already releases and you need monitoring, a schedule, or a tie to another device. A first-time strike cut is the install service. Bring the sequence you wish you had, even if it is a sketch on paper.
Unlock timing, noisy contacts, and a panel someone can read
Mapping, timing, a rex test, and labels are included. A new door is not. UL 294 is the equipment reference. The sequence of operations is the document we leave so the next tech can see which relay does what. We do not leave a bird's nest with one wire nut and a shrug.
Multi-tenant DC buildings often want the stair door to report 'held open' without unlocking the whole floor. That is a door-position contact and a rule, not a louder buzzer. We test the rex from the push side, because a contact that only works when the installer leans on it is not a release.
Frequent questions
What does a request-to-exit test consist of?
Someone leaves the normal way. The strike or the mag releases for that motion, and it does not stay released. If the rex never fires, people will start using the credential to get out, which hides a broken exit path.
Why label every relay?
An unlabeled relay is a door that gets 'fixed' by pulling the wrong wire. The label names the opening and the function. Tape with no words does not count.
How do you catch a noisy door-position contact?
The input is watched while the door is still. A contact that chatters will show a stream of open-and-close events. We reseat or replace it before it trains everyone to ignore alarms.
Can unlock time be different during the day and at night?
Yes, if the controller has a schedule. We set both and we trigger them while you watch, so the night rule is not a checkbox nobody verified.
