Hardware that follows a written specification, not a hallway guess
Federal and other specified facilities get the hardware the specification names. We read the spec. We do not guess at a clearance. Listed mortise locks, exit devices, and key control are matched to the submittal. GSA container questions stay with the container's own rules and are not mixed into a door-hardware quote. Unlisted substitutions, a missing submittal, mixed keyways, and informal key loans are rejected.
Call this only when a written specification exists and you are allowed to have the conversation. A retail shop with a nice lock is not a federal facility job. Bring the spec section, not a paraphrase.
Submittals, listed products, and keys that are not loaned informally
The work is submittal-matched hardware and a document of what was installed. It is not a clearance, a badge, or permission to see a space we are not allowed to see. The facility specification is the authority. An agency standard is followed only as written, not as a rumor about what 'those buildings usually do.'
Washington-area work sometimes involves a door that looks ordinary and is still under a spec. We stop when the spec and the door disagree, rather than installing a closer we happen to stock. Key loans are written. A key handed to a contractor with no record is a finding, not a favor.
Frequent questions
Will you substitute a similar lock if the specified one is back-ordered?
Only if the specification allows a substitution and the submittal is updated. An unlisted lookalike is how a job fails later. We wait or we submit.
Do you decide who may enter a controlled room?
No. The facility decides. We install the hardware the spec describes and we document it. Access policy is not a locksmith guess.
How are GSA containers kept out of a door quote?
A container label is a different object with its own servicing limits. If the request is really about a container, it is quoted on that basis. It is not added as a line under 'mortise lock.'
What does an informal key loan look like, so we can avoid it?
A key leaves with no signature and no return date. We will not do that on a controlled keyway. The record names the holder.
