Office cylinders and a key-control habit the staff can keep

Commercial high security is a restricted cylinder, a mortise where the door needs one, a key cabinet, and a signature card. The keying is designed before pins are cut. Keys are stamped or recorded. Blanks are limited. An admin is shown how a lost key gets retired. A master that opens too much, blanks in a drawer, no signature, and a lost change key are the office failures that make the expensive cylinder pointless.

This fits a suite that cannot live on hardware-store copies. A single residential cylinder is the smaller high-security visit. Bring a list of doors and the names of people who may sign for a key.

Blanks, signature cards, and a master that is too powerful

Design, recording, blank control, and a short lesson for the admin are included. Rekeying every tenant in a tower you do not manage is not. A written key-control policy and UL 437, when the cylinder carries it, are the references. We will not leave a box of blanks in an unlocked desk and call it a system.

Law offices and clinics around Washington share suites with after-hours cleaners. The change key and the master have to be different objects with different people allowed to hold them. A Virginia or Maryland branch office that wants 'one key for the manager that opens everything' gets a warning about what that master is worth if it is lost.

Frequent questions

Why design the keying before any pins are cut?

Because a master that was improvised at the bench opens doors you later wish it did not. The paper tree is cheap. Pulling cylinders out of a finished suite is not.

Where should blanks live?

In a locked cabinet with a person responsible, not in a drawer by the copier. A blank on a restricted keyway is a key that has not been cut yet.

What happens when a change key is lost?

That cylinder is retired or rekeyed, and the signature record is updated. Cutting another copy with no retirement step is how the lost key stays valid.

Can the office manager's key open every room including the server closet?

It can, and we will say what that costs you if the key disappears. Often the closet should be off the master. The tree is drawn that way if you agree.
