Interchangeable cores so a rekey does not pull the whole lock

Interchangeable-core work confirms the format before a control key is cut. Best-style cores, housings, and the control key are a system. Housings are labeled. Blanks are stored as if they were keys, because they are. A lost control key, mixed A2 and A4, unlabeled cores, and a box of cores riding in a truck are the ways the convenience becomes a liability.

This suits a building that rekeys often and wants to swap a core instead of removing a mortise. A single house rekey does not need it. Tell us if a control key already exists. If it is lost, that fact changes the whole plan.

Control keys, A2 versus A4, and cores that must not live in a truck

Format confirmation, a control-key policy, labeled housings, and secure blank storage are the work. Cutting change keys for people who are not on the list is not. SFIC format and ordinary key control are the references. We do not issue a control key as a spare 'master' for the property manager's ring.

Property portfolios around the region lose control keys and then discover every core can be pulled by whoever finds that key. We treat a lost control key as an urgent re-core, not as a story. A2 and A4 pins are not mixed to finish a job on a Friday.

Frequent questions

What does the control key open that a master does not?

It pulls the core out of the housing. It is not a day-to-day opening key. Treating it as a master that lives on a belt is how you lose control of every door in the system.

Why can A2 and A4 not share a pin kit on site?

The depths are different. A core pinned with the wrong system feels almost right and then fails or locks someone out. The format is confirmed from the existing core before any pins are dumped.

Where are spare cores supposed to live?

Labeled, locked, and not in the service truck overnight. A core is a lock that has not been installed yet. An unlabeled core in a cup holder is a keying accident.

What is the response to a lost control key?

Assume every housing it served is compromised. The cores are replaced and the new control key is issued to a named person. We do not cut a fresh control from a rubbing someone thinks they remember.
