A keypad or a phone credential that still has a mechanical backup
Keyless entry here means a keypad or a smart deadbolt with a code list and a backup key. Codes are unique. The factory default is disabled. A key is kept. Codes change at turnover. A shared code on a sticky note, a dead battery, no backup key, and a default code left in place are the lockouts people cause themselves.
Use it on a residence or a small office that wants codes more than cards. A full reader-and-controller system is the card-reader service. Tell us how many people need distinct codes, not one code named after the dog.
Default codes, dead batteries, and turnover code changes
Unique codes, a dead default, a physical key, and a turnover note are the result. Internet service is not included. The manufacturer's backup method and ordinary code hygiene are the rules. We do not leave the installer code armed because it was convenient during setup.
Rental turnovers in the DMV are where one code lives for years and gets texted to every contractor. The visit includes showing how to kill a code without deleting the resident who is staying. Battery doors that are blocked by a storm door or a tight jamb are called out, because a keypad you cannot open to change the cells is a future lockout.

Why delete the default code instead of 'just not telling anyone'?
The default is published. Anyone who knows the model can try it. Disabling it is a step in the setup, and we show you it no longer works.
Where should the backup key live?
With a person, not in a hide-a-key box next to the keypad. We hand you the key. We do not hide it for you.
How should codes change when a roommate moves out?
That person's code is deleted. The others stay. If everyone shared one code, everyone must get a new one. That is the reason unique codes exist.
What happens when the battery door is blocked?
We notice it during the install, while a screwdriver still fits. A storm door or a closer that covers the cell door is adjusted or called out before you own a lock you cannot feed.
