A magnetic lock only where egress is immediate
Magnetic locks hold hard and fail dangerously when they are used as the only way out. The visit confirms egress first. A listed release is set. The button is labeled. Power loss is tested. A maglock on a required exit with no release, no fire-alarm tie where one is required, a weak bond, or a hidden button is refused or rebuilt.
Use a maglock on a door that is not a required exit, or on a required exit only with the release path designed in the same scope. If you wanted a strike, say so. Strikes and magnets are not substitutes. Bring the door's role: stair, suite, gate, or closet.
Request-to-exit, fire-alarm release, and a button people can see
Egress confirmation, a listed release, a label, and a power-loss test are the job. A camera package is not. NFPA 101 is the egress reference. The authority having jurisdiction may still want to see the release. We do not hide the button behind a plant to make the lobby look cleaner.
Glass lobby doors are where magnets get proposed because a strike will not fit the header. The proposal still needs a way out that a visitor can find in the dark. We would rather decline the magnet than be the shop that left a stair door bonded shut.
Frequent questions
Why is a maglock on a stair door treated differently from a suite door?
The stair is a required exit for people who do not have a credential. A suite door may be allowed to stay locked if the occupants have another way. We ask which door it is before the magnet is ordered.
What does the power-loss test show?
Whether the door releases when power is pulled, and whether that behavior matches the fail mode you need. A magnet that stays bonded on a dead supply is a wiring or a specification error, and it is not left that way.
Where is the request-to-exit button allowed to live?
Where a person leaving can see it and reach it without a badge. A button on the ceiling or inside a closet is not a release. We label it in plain words.
Can the fire alarm unlock the magnet?
When the opening requires that tie, yes, and it is tested with the person who maintains the alarm. We do not clip a wire and call it a tie.
