A keying tree drawn on paper before any pin is cut
A commercial master system starts as a drawing. The master, the change keys, the keyway, and the bitting list are decided before a plug is emptied. The master is limited on purpose. Keys are stamped. The bitting list is stored. A maison key that opens everything by accident, an uncontrolled master, no bitting record, and too many changes on one system are the design errors that cannot be polished away later.
Commission this when several doors must open to different people and one or two people need a broader key. A single-family rekey is not a master system. Bring the door list and a sentence about who must not enter the server room or the drug cabinet.
Change keys, bitting lists, and the maison key we will not build
The tree, a limited master, stamped keys, and a stored bitting list are the product. Cutting extra copies with no stamps is not. The keying schedule and a restricted keyway, when you choose one, are the controls. We do not keep the only copy of the bitting list. You get one, and you are told to store it like a key.
Suites that grow by one office at a time are how masters become too powerful. We leave room in the tree or we tell you the system is full. A lost bitting list means the next expansion is a guess, so the list is part of the delivery, not a souvenir.

What is a maison key, and why is it a defect?
A change key that accidentally operates more cylinders than it should, often because two bittings interact. It is found on paper, before it is a key in someone's pocket.
How limited should the master be?
It should skip the rooms that a lost master would hurt most. If you insist it opens all of them, we write that decision down so it was a choice, not a surprise.
Where does the bitting list live?
With the person who may authorize keys, locked up. A photo of it in a group chat is a failed list. We do not become the only holder.
Can you add doors next year without starting over?
If the tree had room and the list survived. If every change was used, the honest answer is a new system. We will not invent bittings that collide.
